The ultimate diva, Mariah Carey, is back with a new single, and she delivers big time on this one.  This isn’t only a return to form for Mimi, but a true return to the basics.  At a time when Mariah is somewhat overexposed, it is nice to see her back to doing what she does best.  Her New Year’s Eve performance disaster, recent breakup, and reality/documentary series on E! has Mariah in the news and blogs for everything but music.

The song, “I Don’t,” features rapper YG and could have easily been released in the mid-90’s.  It’s a throwback jam with a current feel and knocking beat.  YG doesn’t add much lyrically, but his voice fits in nice with the beat.  Plus, this sound and feel takes Mariah back in time when she pioneered the pop and hip hop collaboration.  Also, I want to point out Mariah has scaled back a bit of the vocal tricks in this track which is nice for a change.  I’m one of the people who has always felt she doesn’t have to hit whistle notes in every single song; it’s a welcome change and adds to the relaxed feeling of the song.

In my opinion, this is the type of music where Mariah really thrives and feels comfortable.  I hope this is a harbinger of things to come for the legendary diva.  Things feel fresh again, and that’s quite an achievement 27 years into your career.
